DANIEL HOURDE, 1947-
Daniel Hourdé, born in 1947 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, is a multifaceted artist whose creative journey has encompassed various forms of expression. He initially embarked on his artistic path as a gallery owner and painter but later found his true calling in sculpture, drawing, furniture, and installations. Hourdé's work is characterized by a profound exploration of the human body, a subject that he approaches with absolute freedom, resulting in art that is simultaneously tragic and playful.
Daniel Hourdé attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble and Paris, where he studied painting and drawing. However, it was in the 1980s that he shifted his focus predominantly to sculpture. He employed traditional techniques and materials like bronze to craft sculptures that delve into the genre of vanitas. In this genre, the emptiness of life and the significance of death as the end of worldly pleasures are emphasized, giving his work a thought-provoking dimension.
Hourdé's mastery of human anatomy is evident in his sculpting technique, allowing him to create magnificent larger-than-life figures that consist of skinless, athletic and meticulously sculpted bodies evoking the tradition of the "flayed." Yet, his art constantly challenges conventions by incorporating playful motifs, whimsical titles, and elements from pop culture. This blending of classical and contemporary elements pushes the boundaries of artistic expression.
Several recurring motifs permeate Hourdé's body of work, including skeletons, the Cross, the crown of thorns, themes of Fall and Redemption, and references to the dances of death from the Middle Ages. O Daniel Hourdé γεννήθηκε το 1947 στην Boulogne-Billancourt της Γαλλίας. Φοίτησε στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Γκρενόμπλ για τρία χρόνια κι έπειτα στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Παρισιού έως το 1972.
Η γλυπτική του τέχνη ταλαντεύεται ανάμεσα στη ρεαλιστική αναπαράσταση του ανθρώπινου σώματος, στο παιχνίδι της οπτικής αντίληψής του και σ’ έναν αναπαραστατικό κώδικα των στοιχείων που έχουν επηρεάσει την τέχνη του. Στο έργο του μπορεί κάποιος να διακρίνει στοιχεία από μυθολογικά και θεολογικά επεισόδια, αυτοβιογραφικά θέματα και αναφορές σε ιστορικά γεγονότα όπως και επιρροές από καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Rodin. Το 2017, για τον εορτασμό των εκατό χρόνων από τον θάνατο του Rodin, η πόλη της Bergerac στη Γαλλία επέλεξε την οργάνωση μιας αναδρομικής έκθεσης των έργων του γλύπτη Daniel Hourdé καθώς διακρίνεται μια σαφής σύνδεση και ομοιότητα στην απόδοση της τέχνης των δύο καλλιτεχνών. Άλλοτε οι γλυπτικές φιγούρες συνυπάρχουν με καθημερινά αντικείμενα, όπως τραπέζια, καθρέφτες κ.ά., δίνοντας μια χιουμοριστική διάσταση.
Χαρακτηριστικό στοιχείο της γλυπτικής του αποτελούν οι ανθρωπίνων διαστάσεων φιγούρες με τα εξπρεσιονιστικά και ρεαλιστικά αποδιδόμενα τμήματα του σώματος. Οι μορφές αυτές μπορούν να χαρακτηρισθούν ως σκελετοί, καθώς πρόκειται για φιγούρες χωρίς δέρμα, με τα ανατομικά στοιχεία του ανθρώπινου σώματος ορατά. Οι μορφές του δεν είναι στατικές, αλλά σε μια δυναμική, σχεδόν χορογραφικά προσχεδιασμένη κίνηση. Οι μεγαλειώδεις αυτές φιγούρες εξιστορούν την τραγικότητα, τη δραματικότητα, την βιαιότητα, την αρχή της δημιουργίας αλλά και του πεπρωμένου.
H τέχνη του μπορεί να χαρακτηρισθεί ως φυλετική τέχνη (tribal art) αν και ο ίδιος προτιμά τον όρο «μαύρη τέχνη» (art nègre), αναφερόμενος στην πριμιτιβιστική τέχνη, και πιο συγκεκριμένα στην αφρικανική τέχνη και στην τέχνη της Ωκεανίας, από τις οποίες εμπνέεται.
Τα έργα του βρίσκονται σε διάφορους δημόσιους χώρους, με γνωστότερη την εγκατάσταση γλυπτών το 2016 στην Γέφυρα των Τεχνών ( Pont des Arts) στο Παρίσι με τίτλο The Enchanted Footbridge. Εμπνευσμένα από την κλασική μυθολογία, τα γλυπτά βρίσκονται ανάμεσα στην κατάρρευση και τον κίνδυνο. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η φιγούρα ενός άνδρα ο οποίος βρίσκεται παγιδευμένος κάτω από ένα σύνολο ατσάλινων δοκαριών, τα οποία στο σύνολό τους δημιουργούν την λέξη «ουρανός» στα ελληνικά.
Ο Daniel Hourdé εκτός από την γλυπτική δημιουργεί εγκαταστάσεις, πίνακες και σχέδια με κάρβουνο. Ζει και εργάζεται στο Παρίσι.
