The exhibition "Eric Liot: Excavating the Contemporary" is a bold encounter between Hellenistic heritage and contemporary art, creating the sensation of an archaeological excavation born within the artist's imagination and brought to material form within the gallery space. In Liot’s work, the aesthetics of the 2nd century BC, ranging from the imposing Winged Victory of Samothrace to anonymous busts, are transformed into a modern mythology. The artist reconstructs fragments of memory using a variety of materials, highlighting the timeless power of the heroic figure, whether manifested as the god Hermes or as Superman. The artist's aesthetic is defined by a raw assembly process, where successive layers of materials, exposed joints, screws, and coarse wooden surfaces remain in plain view. This nearly industrial approach is balanced by the use of bronze, which serves as the ultimate connective link, lending Liot’s compositions the durability and weight of high art. Liot himself describes his work as "inverted archaeology," as he chooses not to unearth the past from the soil, but to reconstruct it from scratch using the material remnants of the present.
Η έκθεση "Eric Liot: Ανασκάπτοντας το Σύγχρονο" αποτελεί μια τολμηρή συνάντηση της ελληνιστικής κληρονομιάς με τη σύγχρονη τέχνη, δημιουργώντας την αίσθηση μιας αρχαιολογικής ανασκαφής που γεννιέται μέσα στη φαντασία του καλλιτέχνη και παίρνει υλική διάσταση στον χώρο της έκθεσης. Στο έργο του Liot, η αισθητική του 2ου αι. π.Χ., από την επιβλητική Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης έως τις ανώνυμες προτομές, μετατρέπεται σε μια σύγχρονη μυθολογία. Ο καλλιτέχνης ανασυνθέτει θραύσματα μνήμης χρησιμοποιώντας διάφορα υλικά, και αναδεικνύει τη διαχρονική δύναμη της ηρωικής φιγούρας, είτε πρόκειται για τον θεό Ερμή είτε για τον Superman. Η αισθητική του καλλιτέχνη χαρακτηρίζεται από την ακατέργαστη συναρμολόγηση, όπου οι διαδοχικές προσθήκες υλικών, οι εκτεθειμένες ενώσεις, οι βίδες και οι τραχιές ξύλινες επιφάνειες παραμένουν σε κοινή θέα. Αυτή η σχεδόν βιομηχανική προσέγγιση εξισορροπείται από τη χρήση του μπρούντζου, ο οποίος λειτουργεί ως ο απόλυτος συνδετικός κρίκος, προσφέροντας στις συνθέσεις του Liot τη διαχρονικότητα και το βάρος της υψηλής τέχνης. Ο ίδιος ο Liot χαρακτηρίζει τη δουλειά του ως «ανεστραμμένη αρχαιολογία», καθώς επιλέγει να μην ανασύρει το παρελθόν από το χώμα, αλλά να το οικοδομήσει εκ νέου χρησιμοποιώντας τα υλικά απομεινάρια του σήμερα.
" With this bronze sculpture, one slips into the skin of an archaeologist inventing his own excavations. Petite Amphora blends ancient forms with contemporary elements, as if it had been unearthed from a parallel world. Faces, pipes, and enigmatic fragments adorn its surface, transforming the piece into a fictional memory, somewhere between relic and vision."
