GABRIELLA SIMOSSI, 1926 - 1999
Gabriella Simossi was born in 1926 in Pyrgos, Greece. She attended the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1945 until 1950 with Michalis Tombros . In 1954 she settled permanently in Paris, where she studied at the School of Decorative Arts and Ossip Zadkine's Atelier de Sculpture from 1955 until 1957. Despite the influence of Modernism, which she embraced selectively while maintaining her sculptural idiosyncrasy, she continued to draw inspiration from ancient Greek sculpture. Thus, her idiom consists of classical forms, yet also reveal the influence of surrealism. Her anthropomorphic figures, experiential and autobiographical in character, are fragmented, mutilated, rendered silent as if to express that reality does not allow for classical perfection. The white color of her sculptures reinforces the effect of incompleteness, alienation and lack of communication, which is slightly attenuated by the sense of humor with which she approached her subjects.
Gabriella Simossi had numerous solo exhibitions in Paris, Athens, and other European cities. Additionally, she participated in many group exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 1974. Gabriella Simossi received the Morgan’s Premio award in Ravenna in 1972 and in 1992 was conferred the title of ‘Knights of Arts and Letters’ by the French government. In 1999, the year of her death, a retrospective exhibition of her work took place at the Couvent des Cordelier in Paris.
Η ΓΑΒΡΙΕΛΛΑ ΣΙΜΩΣΙ γεννήθηκε το 1926 στον Πύργο Ηλείας στην Ελλάδα. Παρακολούθησε μαθήματα στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών από το 1945 μέχρι το 1950 με τον Μιχάλη Τόμπρο. To 1954 εγκαταστάθηκε μόνιμα στο Παρίσι, όπου σπούδασε στο Τμήμα Διακοσμητικών Τεχνών από το 1955 έως το 1957 στο Atelier de Sculpture του Ossip Zadkine. Παρά τις επιρροές του μοντερνισμού που αφομοίωσε επιλεκτικά διατηρώντας την γλυπτική της ιδιοσυγκρασία, συνέχισε να αντλεί έμπνευση από την αρχαία ελληνική γλυπτική. Οι κλασικές φόρμες εμπεριέχονται στην πλαστική της γραφή, όπου διακρίνεται η σουρεαλιστική επιρροή. Οι ανθρωπομορφικές φιγούρες της, με βιωματικό και αυτοβιογραφικό χαρακτήρα, είναι κατακερματισμένες, ακρωτηριασμένες, σιωπηλές, σαν να εκφράζουν ότι η πραγματικότητα δεν επιτρέπει την κλασική τελειότητα. Το λευκό χρώμα των γλυπτών της ενισχύει την αίσθηση της ατέλειας, της αλλοτρίωσης και της έλλειψης επικοινωνίας, την οποία απαλύνει ελαφρώς το χιούμορ με το οποίο προσέγγιζε το θέμα της.
Η Γαβριέλλα Σίμωσι έχει οργανώσει πολλές ατομικές εκθέσεις στο Παρίσι, την Αθήνα και άλλες ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις. Επιπλέον, συμμετείχε σε πολλές ομαδικές εκθέσεις, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης στο Παρίσι το 1974. Η Γαβριέλλα Σίμωσι έλαβε το Βραβείο Premio της Morgan στη Ραβέννα το 1972 και το 1992 απέκτησε τον τίτλο «Ιππότες Τεχνών και Γραμμάτων» από την Γαλλική κυβέρνηση. Το 1999, το έτος του θανάτου της, έγινε μια αναδρομική έκθεση για το έργο της στο Couvent des Cordelier στο Παρίσι.
