MA DESHENG, 1952-
Ma Desheng was born in 1952 in Beijing. Denied the opportunity to go to art school because he was disabled by childhood polio, Ma Desheng became an autodidact. During the day he worked as a draftsman in a factory and at night he made wood engravings with little hope of ever being able to share his work with the public. But when Mao’s death in 1976 ended the Cultural Revolution a seemingly more liberal climate filled the young artist with new aspirations. In fact, Ma Desheng went on to play a pivotal role in propelling Chinese art into the realm of free expression.
In 1979 he became the co-founder of the XingXing (the Stars), a group of 28 members that paved the way for the development of contemporary art in China. Juxtaposed against the sun that served as an emblem of unification under Mao, the Stars celebrated individuality and diversity. Ma Desheng reflects: “Each artist is a small star. Even great artists remain small stars in the cosmic firmament. We chose the name Stars to affirm our individuality and stand up against the uniformity of the Cultural Revolution.”
The first Star exhibition, in which Ma Desheng, Huang Rui, Ai Wei Wei, Wang Keping and others participated, opened on September 27, 1979, but was closed down after two days by the authorities. Two months later a new show was put up in the Hua Fang Pavilion inside Beihai Park in Beijing, which attracted no less than 40.000 visitors. In August 1980 another exhibition followed, this time in the National Art Gallery. It was the very popularity of the Stars group –the 1980 exhibition was visited by at least 80.000 people- that created problems for its members. Harassed and boycotted, the artists of the Stars left China one after the other. Ma Desheng had started to produce ink wash paintings of feminine nudes, a concept that broke radically with Chinese tradition, something that did not sit well with the authorities. He left China in 1985 and settled soon after in Paris, where he still lives.
Once in the West, Ma Desheng embarked on an international career with exhibitions in Europe, the US and Japan. But then disaster struck. He had a terrible car accident in 1992, which left him wheelchair-bound. He spend two years in hospital and underwent endless treatments which eventually restored the strength in his hands to the point where he could draw again, not with inks but with felt-tip pens.
In the early 2000s he started to use acrylics, creating monumental paintings with a new theme: that of stones, precariously balanced yet solid and stacked in such a way that they often resemble the human figure. His work “Story of Stone” was shown in a solo exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2010. In 2011 the exhibition Etres de pierre; souffle de vie (Beings of stone; breath of life) followed in Museum of Asian Art in Nice.
According to Ma the stone shelters ‘the fire of the volcano’, it is a natural habitat that transcends the notion of a physical envelope in very much the same way as the human body can be understood as the receptacle of a true life force within. He asserts that the stones in his work represent the way he sees life: “(…) each event participates in the construction of who we are. I consider the stones as the origin of life: they consist of soil, the primordial element; they are solid and eternal, they never change, contrary to all other natural elements. Such is life: a succession of stones that we can stack one on top of the other as we see fit, but that pile is both solid and fragile because of its precarious equilibrium.”
In Ma Desheng’s stone paintings the bounderies between sculpture and painting is obliterated. Hence his next logical step was to make bronze sculptures that render the images in his paintings three-dimensional. Currently Ma Desheng is preparing an exhibition to show this new and exciting work.
Faced with near impossible adversity Ma Desheng is an artist that has tapped into the true cosmic meaning of life, which he seeks to express in every way open to him. Apart from being a painter and sculptor, Ma Desheng is a poet as well and recites from his own work at festivals. He continues to work and live in Paris.
Ο MA DESHENG γεννήθηκε το 1952 στο Πεκίνο. Μην έχοντας την ευκαιρία να φοιτήσει σε σχολή τέχνης λόγω της αναπηρίας του από παιδική πολιοµυελίτιδα, ο Ma Desheng έγινε αυτοδίδακτος. Κατά τη διάρκεια της ηµέρας εργαζόταν σε εργοστάσιο και τη νύχτα έφτιαχνε ξύλινα χαρακτικά χωρίς να έχει όµως κάποια ελπίδα ότι θα µπορέσει µια µέρα να µοιραστεί το έργο του µε το κοινό. Με τον θάνατο του Μάο Τσετούνγκ το 1976 έληξε η Πολιτιστική Επανάσταση και ξεκίνησε ένα φαινοµενικά πιο φιλελεύθερο κλίµα, το οποίο γεµίσε τον νεαρό καλλιτέχνη µε νέες προσδοκίες.
Στη συνέχεια, ο Ma Desheng έπαιξε κεντρικό ρόλο στη διάδοση της κινεζικής τέχνης και της ελεύθερης έκφρασης. Το 1979 έγινε συνιδρυτής του XingXing (τα αστέρια), µια οµάδα 28 µελών που άνοιξε το δρόµο για την ανάπτυξη της σύγχρονης τέχνης στην Κίνα. Αντίθετα από το σύµβολο του ήλιου που χρησιμοποιούνταν την εποχή του Μάο, τα αστέρια συµβόλιζαν την ενοποίηση, την ατοµικότητα και την ποικιλοµορφία. Ο Μa Desheng χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρει «κάθε καλλιτέχνης είναι ένα µικρό αστέρι. Ακόµη και οι µεγάλοι καλλιτέχνες παραµένουν µικρά αστέρια στο κοσµικό σφενδάµι. Επιλέξαµε το όνοµα Αστέρια για να διεκδικήσουµε την ατοµικότητα και να αντισταθούμε στην ομοιομορφία της Πολιτιστικής Επανάστασης». Η πρώτη έκθεση Star, στην οποία συµµετείχαν οι Ma Desheng, Huang Rui, Ai Wei Wei, Wang Keping και άλλοι, άνοιξε στις 27 Σεπτεµβρίου του 1979, αλλά έκλεισε µετά από δύο ηµέρες. Δύο µήνες αργότερα παρουσιάστηκε µια νέα έκθεση στο Pavilion Hua Fang στο πάρκο Beihai του Πεκίνου, το οποίο προσέλκυσε τουλάχιστον 40.000 επισκέπτες. Τον Αύγουστο του 1980 ακολούθησε µια άλλη έκθεση, αυτή τη φορά στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη. Ήταν η µεγάλη δηµοτικότητα της ομάδας Stars -την έκθεση του 1980 επισκέφθηκαν τουλάχιστον 80.000 άνθρωποι- που δηµιούργησε προβλήµατα στα µέλη του. Λόγω των παρενοχλήσεων και του µποϊκοτάζ, οι καλλιτέχνες των Αστεριών έφυγαν από την Κίνα ο ένας µετά τον άλλον. Ο Ma εκείνη την περίοδο είχε αρχίσει να ζωγραφίζει πίνακες γυµνών γυναικών, ένα θέµα εκ διαµέτρου αντίθετο από την κινεζική παράδοση και ιδιαίτερα ενοχλητικό στις αρχές. Έφυγε από την Κίνα το 1985 και εγκαταστάθηκε στο Παρίσι, όπου ζει ακόµα.
Μόλις εγκαταστάθηκε στη Δύση, ο Ma Desheng ξεκίνησε µια διεθνή σταδιοδροµία µε εκθέσεις στην Ευρώπη, τις ΗΠΑ και την Ιαπωνία. Αλλά τότε ένα δυσάρεστο συµβάν συνέβη. Είχε ένα τροµερό αυτοκινητιστικό δυστύχηµα το 1992, το οποίο τον άφησε σε αναπηρικό καροτσάκι. Έµεινε δύο χρόνια στο νοσοκοµείο και υποβλήθηκε σε ατελείωτες θεραπείες οι οποίες τελικά αποκατέστησαν τη δύναµη στα χέρια του µέχρι το σηµείο που θα µπορούσε να σχεδιάσει και πάλι, όχι µε µελάνια αλλά µε στυλογράφους. Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2000 άρχισε να χρησιµοποιεί ακρυλικά, δηµιουργώντας µνηµειώδη έργα ζωγραφικής µε ένα νέο θέµα: αυτό των λίθων, ασταθές ισορροπηµένο αλλά στερεό και στοιβαγµένο µε τέτοιο τρόπο που συχνά µοιάζουν µε την ανθρώπινη µορφή. Το έργο του Story of Stone παρουσιάστηκε σε ατοµική έκθεση στο Κέντρο Τεχνών του Χονγκ Κονγκ το 2010. Το 2011 ακολούθησε η έκθεση Êtres de pierre. Souffle de vie (Όντα από πέτρα. Αναπνοή της ζωής) στο Μουσείο Ασιατικής Τέχνης στη Νίκαια.
Σύµφωνα µε τον Ma οι πέτρες κρύβουν «την φωτιά του ηφαιστείου», είναι ένας φυσικός οικότοπος που ξεπερνά την έννοια ενός φυσικού περιβλήµατος µε τον ίδιο ακριβώς τρόπο που το ανθρώπινο σώµα µπορεί να γίνει αντιληπτό ως η πηγή µιας αληθινής δύναµης ζωής. Υποστηρίζει ότι οι πέτρες στο έργο του αντιπροσωπεύουν τον τρόπο που βλέπει τη ζωή: «(...) κάθε γεγονός συµµετέχει στην κατασκευή του ποιοί είµαστε. Θεωρώ τις πέτρες ως την προέλευση της ζωής: αποτελούνται από χώµα, το αρχέγονο στοιχείο. Είναι σταθερές και αιώνιες, δεν αλλάζουν ποτέ, σε αντίθεση µε όλα τα άλλα φυσικά στοιχεία. Αυτή είναι η ζωή: µια διαδοχή από πέτρες που µπορούµε να στοιβάζουµε το ένα επάνω στο άλλο όπως κρίνουµε σκόπιµο, αλλά ο σωρός είναι τόσο σταθερός όσο και εύθραυστος εξαιτίας της ισορροπίας του».
Στις πέτρινες ζωγραφιές του Ma Desheng, τα όρια µεταξύ γλυπτικής και ζωγραφικής εξαφανίζονται. Ως εκ τούτου, το επόµενο λογικό του βήµα ήταν να φτιάξει χάλκινα γλυπτά που καθιστούν τις εικόνες στις ζωγραφιές του τρισδιάστατες.
Αντιµέτωπος µε τις σχεδόν αδύνατες αντιξοότητες, ο Ma Desheng είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης που έχει εµπλακεί στην αληθινή κοσµική έννοια της ζωής, την οποία επιδιώκει να εκφράζει µε κάθε τρόπο ανοιχτό σε αυτόν. Εκτός από ζωγράφος και γλύπτης, ο Ma Desheng είναι επίσης ποιητής και απαγγέλλει πολύ συχνά τα ποιήματά του σε φεστιβάλ. Ζει και να εργάζεται στο Παρίσι.
